Mindset Project Mindset has contributed to everyone’s lives in different ways but the big idea of mindset is how it works and what it is. How does the idea of mindset contribute to nature? Nature like us, are forced to deal with different situations throughout life that can be stressing. Due to the stress, we might feel like we don’t want to try anymore and that’s when some might start to develop a fixed mindset. A fixed mindset is when a person believes that they are born with their talents and abilities. Having a growth mindset means that you believe others and yourself can develop your talents as you grow older. Many psychologists have studied mindsets but there is one Stanford professor named Carol Dweck and she has a theory about growth and fixed mindsets. The question that she asked herself was how will these mindsets affect the knowledge of growing minors. She started by dividing two groups of kindergarteners and tested out her theory. She argued,”Through a series of exercises, the experiments trained half the students to chalk up their errors to insufficient effort, and encouraged them to keep going. The control group showed no improvement at all, continuing to fall apart quickly and to recover slowly(paragraph 8).” She found that the group taught with the growth mindset kept trying to solve a very difficult math problem. On the contrary, the group taught with the fixed mindset just gave up because they did not have much motivation. This proved Carol Dweck’s theory was correct. Some people think that they are born with talent and Carl Dweck noted that “The key, she found, isn’t ability; it’s whether you look at ability as something you inherit that needs to be demonstrated or as something that can be developed(paragraph 3)”.The thing that started this whole experiment was a soccer team from the United Kingdom’s Premier League. When kids are young they start with a fixed mindset and as they grow most people continue life with a growth mindset. This happens when you get encouraged and continue succeeding.I have a fixed and growth mindset because for some subjects, like music, I don’t like to try anything new like a playing a solo because I’m scared of failing.I also have a growth mindset because I decided to push myself and try cross country. The significance of a growth mindset is important to know because it determines whether you're confident in yourself or not. The reason why the growth mind is connected to your confidence is because people who have this type of mindset push themselves to try and experience new things throughout life. Having a growth mindset is important to have when you enter high school. Our symbol, a dried vine stem vs. the growing vines, will represent a fixed vs. growth mindset. The vines imitates how we continue to grow and succeed in life even though we sometimes, have our ups and downs. The small, little, dried. not growing vine shows people, that just give up automatically and do not keep trying. Many people have a fixed or growth mindset which is like the small little, dried, not growing vine and the growing vines. To recap, they are like us, with the fixed and growth mindsets. Lastly, the book represents different stories and the big idea of our project about fixed and growth mindset.
What does this mean to me?This quote means to me that you need to be confident, if you want to be a scientist, be a scientist when you grow up. Never give up, don't doubt yourself. You will have to put some effort but it will happen, be courageous. You sometimes have to challenge yourself to pursued to your future it is not just going to happen like that. Just because you see something it difficult does not mean you have to give up.
